Welcome to Digital Cultures of the Global East

Hello, and thank you for visiting our site. We’re excited to introduce a new initiative: Digital Cultures of the Global Easta research hub dedicated to examinations of emerging artistic, cultural, technological and geopolitical dynamics across and beyond what is often referred to as ‘the Global East’.

In this first phase, the project will unfold through three interconnected strands:

  • research journal
  • A programme of events
  • A set of consulting and advisory services

These strands are still in development, so stay tuned as we roll out new content and opportunities. If you’d like to receive updates, click here to subscribe to our newsletter. And if you’re interested in being more actively involved, we’d love to hear from you—we’re currently looking for editors, curators, and event organisers to join our growing team. Please get in touch at contact@digitalicons.org.

As always, this project is—and will remain—independent. While many of us are affiliated with universities, museums or cultural institutions, the project itself is unaffiliated with any institution or corporation. Our independence is essential: it grounds our commitment to equitable, inclusive, and ethical approaches to the production and circulation of knowledge. Independence takes effort, time, and collective care—if you’d like to support us in any way, we’d be glad to hear from you.

Call for Participation: Re-thinking the Global East

Our first initiative invites researchers, artists and media makers to take part in a collaborative inquiry into the idea of the Global East—its spatial, historical and conceptual dimensions, and how it intersects with or diverges from frameworks like the Global South and the Global North. This discussion will take shape through a series of talks planned for 2026, culminating in a publication (a special journal issue or similar formats).

If you are interested in joining as a speaker or moderator, or if you’d like to suggest someone for the programme, please contact us at contact@digitalicons.org.

Key questions we’re exploring include:

  • What are the spatial and temporal dimensions of the Global East?
  • What are the intellectual and political histories of the term?
  • How can the Global East be understood in inclusive and just terms? What are the blind spots in existing conceptualisations?
  • How might we approach the cultures—particularly digital cultures—of the Global East?
  • In what ways can we experience, reflect on, represent or engage with the Global East?

Feel free to send us a proposal (an abstract, image or film) and your short bio (150-200 words) by the 1st of November 2025 at contact@digitalicons.org.
